We’re approaching the most challenging part of the Road to Success project as our participants gear up to present the ideas they’ve planned for a Community Day to our sharks, local business leaders, tomorrow at Toyota.
Looking to ‘invest’ in their ideas are Dean Jackson, owner of Derby based wetsuit company HUUB, Sharon Jeffery, Marketing Manager at Timms Solicitors, Hannah Peate, Sport and Health Partnership Manager at South Derbyshire District Council and Mairi Gordon who is this project’s Toyota shark. The panel will be chaired by Sporting Futures’ Director Will Turner. Take a look over on our social media for our Meet the Sharks feature.
On top of planning for this and looking to impress our sharks, they all had mock interviews last week, and are getting ready for experience next week! So as things are getting pretty busy, the skills our participants have learnt so far are really coming into play.
Everyone shone in the individual interviews, showcasing the skills learnt in the previous interview skills workshop, and remembering how to present themselves to potential employers, as we covered in the workshop with Another Voice. They were also able to talk about the other workshops and qualifications we’ve covered, including their official First Aid course.
One of our participants, Chloe, had even updated her CV to already include the Toyota Road to Success – we were very impressed by how up-to-date and informative it was! And our favourite answer to any question of the day came from James who when asked the Sporting Futures interview question: ‘If you were a biscuit, what would you be and why?’ (we like to make them think outside the box!), replied with a Jaffa Cake – there’s different sides to them, they can be a cake or a biscuit, but either way, they’re still nice.
The overall level we saw in the interviews was fantastic, and we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s Sharks Tank where our young people can show off how much they’ve learnt, and how well they’re doing, to local business partners. The Sharks Tank is designed to be a big challenge for them as they take the stage in front of 5 high-level professionals – but recent performances have left us with no doubt that they will do brilliantly. All that remains to be seen is who will gain the sharks’ investment – but that won’t be revealed until our celebration event next week!
